There are few places on earth more dangerous to be born than Somalia. In part this is because there are so few places where mothers can safely give birth.
Somalia has one of the world’s highest rates of death among children and mothers. Internal conflicts coupled with frequent droughts and floods have displaced more than one million people, while severe malnutrition is taking a deadly toll. The country suffers from a scarcity of basic services like safe drinking water, health clinics, and trained health professionals.
WHAT WE DO
Strengthen Health Clinics – Medair works with trusted local partners to train and supervise health clinic staff and provide them with essential drugs and supplies. We focus our support on primary health care, vaccinations, and safe childbirth.
Nutrition – Medair runs a comprehensive malnutrition treatment programme that nourishes and saves the lives of young children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
Community Health – We have had great success in Somalia using “Care Groups” of trained volunteers who regularly visit the families in their community to promote good health, hygiene, and nutrition.
